A journey of food, culture, and self-discovery in Spain.

Hi, I’m Mel — a writer and explorer moving from Florida to San Sebastián to study Gastronomic Sciences and share the adventure along the way.

Nice to Meet You.

I’m Mel, and I created Mel in Motion to document my leap into a new life in Spain; where I’ll be studying Gastronomic Sciences and exploring food, culture, and healing along the way.

I’m a storyteller, student, and adventurer who believes food is more than what’s on the plate; it’s history, culture, justice, and joy. This site is where I’ll share the ups and downs of moving abroad, starting grad school, and discovering Spain through flavor and connection.

What Is Gastronomic Science?

In short, Gastronomic Sciences is the study of food in context.

  • It’s the exploration of food from all sides. Think: culture, politics, ecology, tradition, innovation, and sensory discovery. It integrates research and narrative, critical thinking and bodily engagement. It's not culinary school; it's systems thinking through the lens of food.

  • Spain, and especially the Basque region, offered the right combination of depth, rhythm, and cultural richness. After years of burnout in the U.S., I needed a place where I could slow down and study something that mattered. I didn’t just need new skills; I needed a new way of being.

Gastronomy & Basque Culture: Explorations

  • Gastronomic Sciences

    Gastronomic Sciences

Gastronomic Science is not just cooking, but rather an exploration of food as biology, as culture and as catalyst.

From chemistry of taste to food ethics, this area examines how what we eat influences who we are.

Enter the theoretical kitchen and uncover the unseen narrative of food: one of transformation, of identity, of systemic change.

Basque Cuisine: Una Tradición En Vida

In Basque Country, food is memory, pride, and ritual. From salt-bleached airs that season its seafood to volcanic ground that nourishes its crops, Basque cooking is a tale of resilience, community, and fierce identity.

Here, simplicity is sacred. Recipes are heirlooms, and meals are events that take place in cider houses, pintxos bars, and family kitchens alike. This is a food culture rooted in tradition, yet always evolving.

Come along and explore the ingredients and traditions behind one of the world's most cherished food heritage, Basque cuisine.

  • Cultural Foodways

    Cultural Foodways

Food is memory, migration, and power.

Delve into the ways that identity, displacement, and resistance define what we eat…and why that matters.

From Basque shepherding traditions to global food narratives shaped by colonization, gender, and climate, this section examines food as both personal ritual and political act.

Here, gastronomy provides access to history, health, and conviviality.

    Gastronomic Tourism

What if travel was more than seeing the world? Maybe it’s about tasting and experiencing too.

Dive into my exploration of the way food brings us into culture, memory, and meaning. From coastal vineyards to roadside markets, flavor is our guide.

If you’re planning a trip to the Basque Country or even dreaming of your next destination, this is your compass for slow, sensory travel: rooted in place, story, and plate.

  • Recipes & Rituals

    Recipes & Rituals

Food is something more than fuel. It’s memory, meaning, and ritual.

It is an homage to the sacred rhythm of the kitchen, where old recipes, seasons and mindful cooking converge.

This is where tradition and tenderness intersect. Each dish has its own unique story.

  • Markets & Makers

    Markets & Makers

Behind every dish is someone who made it possible.

Here, the focus is on the fishers, farmers, artisans, and vendors who preserve food traditions. They’re the ones that make it all happen; from Basque cheesemongers and grain keepers to the busy markets of Donostia.
